İbn Asâkir
İbn Asâkir is a medieval Muslim historian who grew up in Dımaşk and died in Dımaşk in 571/1175 (). Among the sources for the Islamic period of Kurdish history, he is mentioned as a valuable author whose testimony is particularly valuable for the Mervânîler era.
His Work
İbn Asâkir's most important work that has survived to our day is his eighty-volume work titled Târihu Medîneti Dımaşk (). This voluminous work, written in the genre of city history, is the product of the author's vast knowledge.
Its Importance for Kurdish History
The author's importance for Kurdish history stems from the route he followed during his travels. During his journeys, İbn Asâkir visited the old Mervânî cities of Bidlis, Duneyser, Erzen, and Mardin, where he met many scholars remaining from the Mervânîler period and provided information about them in his work (). This direct testimony makes the information he conveyed particularly valuable for the Mervânîler period ().
