Bâz

Bâz (full name Ebû Abdillâh el-Hüseyin), was a Kurdish tribal chief who lived in Northern Mesopotamia in the 10th century and is considered the ancestor of the Mervânî dynasty, which would be established later.

Bâz belonged to the Çehârbuxtî branch of the Humeydî, one of the most important Kurdish tribes in the vast geographical area called Zevezân (Zozan) in the Middle Ages. Sources regarding the Mervânîs' ethnic identity show this dynasty as belonging to the Çehârbuxtî branch of the Humeydî tribe of the Kurds; this geography extended from Musul in the south to the border of Ahlât, to the city of Selmâs in Azerbaijan in the east, and to Diyarbekir in the west, and a significant part of it was a mountainous region with few arable plains (Cilt 1, s. 129).

Bâz initially lived in the Bahismî Mountains between Bitlis-Hîzân and Siirt-Ma'den, grazing his sheep flocks. Over time, he began to organize raids on nearby settlements; his greatest helper in these expeditions was the Beşnevî (Bejnevî) tribe in the Cizre region (Cilt 1, s. 129).

Mervânî Hanedanına Geçiş

Bâz's rise is intertwined with the kinship ties that connected his family to the Mervânî dynasty. Bâz's sister, Fehm, originally from Kurmâs Köyü between Siirt and Maden, married Mervân b. Kek, who was a miller in this village and belonged to one of the village's prominent families. Four sons and one daughter were born from this marriage. When Bâz began to embark on raids, Mervân's sons joined their uncle's army and never left his side for a moment (Cilt 1, s. 130).

When Bâz was killed in a battle, the administration passed to the children of his brother-in-law, Mervân b. Kek. He was succeeded by his eldest nephew, Ebû Ali el-Hasan b. Mervân, who can be considered the true founder of the Mervânî State. Ebû Ali was killed by a person named Ebû Tâhir Yûsuf b. Dimne while entering the city of Amid through Bâbu'l-Mâ (Dicle Kapısı) on 4 Zilkade 387 (8 November 997); many soldiers accompanying him suffered the same fate. Thus, after Bâz's death, the process leading to the establishment of the Mervânî dynasty, which would rule Northern Mesopotamia between 983-1085, began (Cilt 1, s. 129; Cilt 1, s. 130).
