Çermik

Çermik is an administrative unit located in the Diyarbekir region during the Ottoman period; in sources, it is sometimes mentioned as a nahiye and sometimes as a kaza, along with places like Amid (Diyarbekir), Mardin, Ruha, Siverek, Ergani.

Tahrir Records

Ottoman tahrir defters record Çermik within the administrative division of Diyarbekir Eyalet. While counting the livas dependent on Diyarbekir, Amid, Mardin, Birecik, Ruha, Çermik, Ergani, Harput, Arabgir, Kiğı, and Çemişgezek are mentioned together; in the relevant defter, the revenues and tax items of the villages dependent on these units were recorded (Volume 3, p. 21). Çermik is also mentioned as a nahiye among the administrative units listed in the region's tahrir records, in the context of Çapakçur's Sekeran nahiye (Volume 3, p. 22).

Diyarbekir Administrative Structure

In a Ruus defter record listing the sanjaks dependent on Diyarbekir vilayet (defter numbered A. RSK.d, 1452), under the heading "Elviye-i Tabi-i vilayeti Diyarbekir," Amid, Ergani, Ruha, Siverek, Tercil, and Çermik are also counted along with others (Volume 3, p. 48). These records show that Çermik is a unit included in Diyarbekir's formal administrative structure.

Çermik Kaza in Salnames

In the late Ottoman period, in the administrative division reflected in the vilayet salnames, Çermik appears as a kaza dependent on the Ergani (Ergani Madeni) Sanjak; it is counted among the kazas of this sanjak along with Palu and Siverek (Volume 4, p. 119). In the statistics of Diyarbekir Vilayet, Çermik Kaza is recorded as dependent on the Ergani Madeni Sanjak with approximately 119 villages (Volume 4, p. 127). Among the settlement units of the kaza, places like Redtaf, Konaği, Mediye, Mansuran, and Çüngüş are shown along with Çermik itself (Volume 4, p. 159). Çermik Kaza also appears as one of the independent headings in the Diyarbekir vilayet salnames of the period (Volume 4, p. 256).
