el-Mekîn
Other names: İbnü'l-Amîd, Makîn b. al-'Amîd
el-Mekîn (el-Mekîn Circis İbnü'l-Amîd) is a historian known for his general history work written in Arabic. The section of this work dedicated to the Ayyubids is considered among the fundamental sources for post-Selâhaddîn Ayyubid history ().
Content and Sources of the Work
The close resemblance between el-Mekîn's general history book and İbn Vâsıl's work titled et-Târîhü's-Sâlihî suggests that the author extensively utilized İbn Vâsıl's work (). The section of the work referred to as Ahbârü'l-Eyyûbiyyîn covers the years 602/1205-658/1260 and contains detailed information, especially for Ayyubid history after the death of el-Melikü'l-Kâmil (). However, it is noted that the author occasionally used his material haphazardly and made chronological errors ().
Publication and Translations in Europe
The aforementioned section of el-Mekîn's work is among the Arabic historical studies that garnered early interest in Europe. The text, translated into Latin along with its Arabic original in 1625 (T. Erpenius, Historia Saracenica, Leiden 1625), became one of the first historical works written in Arabic to become popular in Europe (). The Ahbârü'l-Eyyûbiyyîn section was later published by Claude Cahen ().
