Eruh

Share

Eruh, located around present-day Siirt, is a Kürt region mentioned in historical sources for its castle and ancient settlement. Its name appears in both Antikçağ and İslamî dönem geographical literature and Osmanlı archival documents.

In literature dealing with Antikçağ and İslamî dönem sources, among the old place names, "Sedukh/Eski Eruh" is mentioned as one of the names associated with the region's ancient historical geography (Vol. 1, p. 30; Vol. 1, p. 233).

In İslamî dönem geographical and historical works, Eruh stands out with its castle. Eruh Kalesi is also among the castles Bağdadî listed in the Zozan region. In this context, sources describing the events of 1133 discuss how the Zengîler gained control of the castles of Hamidiye, Beşneviyye, and some other Kürt tribes; these castles are mentioned in the context of various historical events (Vol. 2, p. 113).

In documents from the Osmanlı period, Eruh appears in the military and administrative correspondence of the I. Dünya Savaşı years. Among these documents is a telegram sent from Eruh, signed by the Bitlis Vali Vekili, stating that a unit was formed from the Botan tribes and gathered in Pervari. In the catalogs of the same period, documents related to the Botan Aşireti, the recapture of Van, and Bediüzzaman Said-i Kürdî are also found together (Vol. 3, p. 130).
