Roma
Roma (Roman Empire) is one of the main political powers where pre-Islamic Kurdish history took place; due to its eastern campaigns and relations with Iranian empires, Latin sources contain information about Kurdish geography (Cilt 1, s. 20).
The relations between Roma and the Persians, along with church histories and records of Christian martyrs, directly concern ancient Kurdish historiography (Cilt 1, s. 21). Pompey mentions Gordyene along with Armenia and Mesopotamia among the countries reached by Roman domination (Cilt 1, s. 29).
The Roma-Persian/Sasanian struggle deeply affected the region; Dio Cassius recounts that the geography west of the Dicle, from the Fırat to the borders of Corduene, was subjected to Roman occupation (Cilt 1, s. 35). Ammianus Marcellinus also refers to the Sasanian-Roma struggle in the fourth century and to communities like the Zap people mentioned during this time (Cilt 1, s. 19).
