Malatya is a center located on the western border of the geography inhabited by the Kurds; a source states that the Kurds extended from the west of the Şam region northwards to Malatya, a distance of twenty-seven days (Volume 2, p. 71). It is also recorded that Hesnaniyye was mentioned in the Bilad-ı Kerkar region (between Amed and Malatya) (Volume 2, p. 40).

In Malatya, in addition to Hısn’ül-Ekrad (Kurdish Castle), there was also an administrative structure named “Kaletu el-Ekrad” (Castle of the Kurds) (Volume 2, p. 75).

During the Ottoman period, Malatya was the subject of tahrir defters and Şer’iyye sicils (Volume 3, p. 3, 4); the Harput icmal defter numbered 264 is also among the Malatya records (Volume 3, p. 22). The region's waqfs provide important clues about the cultural and religious life of the Kurds (Volume 3, p. 23).
